We want to make joining Scouting easy for you and your child. Starting something new often comes with lots of questions, and if your child has decided they want to become a Scout, that’s perfectly normal!

Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we’ve been asked. But if you don’t find what you’re looking for, use the contact details at the bottom of the page to send us a message, and we’ll be happy to help or check our parent’s handbook.

The Basics

Can my child join 224 North London Air Scouts?

Absolutely! Scouting has been open to all children, regardless of gender, since 1991, and we’d love to welcome your young adventurer to 224 North London Air Scouts!

What age does my child need to be?

We offer exciting sessions for children between the ages of 4 and 14:

  • Squirrels (4 to 6 years): We currently do not have this section but are looking for a team of volunteers to take on the challenge.
  • Beavers (6 to 8 years)
  • Cubs (8 to 10½ years)
  • Scouts (10½ to 14 years)

Is there any flexibility with the age groups?

Yes, most sections allow for about six months of flexibility on either side of the age range. This gives young people more time if needed or lets them stay with friends when it’s time to move up. The only exception is Explorer Scouts, where members leave at 18.

Can I join a waiting list if my child is too young?

Definitely! You can add your child’s details to our online waiting list so they can join when there’s space.

All Scout Groups rely on the efforts of our adult volunteers (Leaders, Assistants, Executive Committee, etc.), without whom they cannot continue to operate. We always need more adult volunteers; therefore, we prioritise those on the waiting list who have an adult family member willing and able to take on a Role within the Group.

How safe will my child be?

Your child’s safety is our top priority. As part of The Scout Association’s Young People First policy, all adult and youth volunteers follow strict safeguarding procedures outlined in the Yellow and Orange Cards. Our goal is to create a safe, fun environment free from harm.

Can I stay with my child during their session?

We know younger children may initially feel nervous, but most settle in quickly once their grown-ups step out. If you’re keen to stick around and get involved, why not consider becoming an adult volunteer? It’s a great way to share these experiences with your child while supporting our group.

How much does it cost?

How much does membership cost at 224 North London Air Scouts?

Our membership subscription is £50 per young person per term. Our online portal collects this fee at the start of each term via GoCardless – Direct Debit.

Can I pay based on how many sessions my child attends?

No, our fees are a membership subscription, not an attendance fee. They help cover our programme costs, insurance, utility bills, and other expenses, so the total amount is due each term, regardless of how many sessions your child attends.

Is there a free trial?

Yes! We offer a three-week free trial session to ensure that Scouting is a good fit for your child. During the trial, your child will meet others in their section and decide whether to join.

Can I pay in a different way?

We prefer payments through Online Scout Manager, which uses GoCardless, but if you’re having trouble with this, just let us know, and we’ll do our best to help.

When do I need to pay?

Once your child becomes a full member, the membership subscription is due immediately after the free trial ends.

Do you offer financial help?

Yes, if you’re struggling with payments, please contact us. We understand and are happy to offer extended payment plans or other financial assistance where possible. Don’t hesitate to get in touch—all conversations are confidential.

How much does the uniform cost?

Your child will need a uniform before being officially invested as a full member. You can purchase uniforms from the Scouts’ online store with the latest prices.

Uniform

Does my child need to wear a uniform at 224 North London Air Scouts?

Yes, we are a uniformed organisation and take great pride in seeing our members wear uniforms. It’s a big part of the Scouting tradition! Uniforms can be bought from scout shops online—check the section your child is in to ensure you get the right one.

When does my child need their uniform?

We ask that all new members have their uniforms within six weeks of joining. Your child won’t be officially invested in their section until they wear the proper uniform, so it’s essential to have it ready.
