Scout Association parent rota page
What is a Parent Rota?
Each of our sections operates a parent rota to ensure we have enough adults to run activities safely. This page provides all the details about the parent rota system.
Quite simply, a list of our members’ parents (or relatives) who have agreed to help out on a Colony/Pack/Troop Nights.
Why do we need a Parent Rota?
Safety is always our number one priority. Our volunteer leadership teams work extremely hard to plan and prepare our regular activities and sessions alongside camps and events. For the safety of our young people, it is important that all of our activities have sufficient adults present to run and supervise all activities, and this need can often not be met by our volunteer leaders alone.
How often will I need to volunteer?
One parent of every youth member in the group is expected to take part in the parent rota for their child’s section at least once a term (although parents are always welcome to come along more often if they wish!). The only exception to this is for families where a family member is already volunteering for the Group in an official leadership or administrative role. Unfortunately if you choose not to turn up for your session on the rota, it is sometimes unlikely that the leaders can safely run the session, and this might thus lead to sessions being cancelled at very short notice and young people sent home disappointed..
What will I be expected to do?
Our section leaders will guide you through a variety of tasks to help with the session, whether it’s supporting activities or supervising. You’ll always be within sight and hearing of one of our leaders, and we’ll never ask you to supervise a group of young people on your own. We’ll do our best to assign tasks you’re comfortable with, and if something doesn’t feel right, just let us know, and we’ll adjust things.
Tasks might include:
- Preparing drinks
- Setting up tables and chairs
- Helping to organise activities
- Assisting with games
There may be times when there’s not much to do, but your presence is still important. With enough adult supervision, we can safely leave the Scout Hut for outdoor activities, as we meet the required adult-to-child ratios.
How do I sign up?
Sign in to the Parent Portal and select Programme from the menu.
Will I need a Background Check?
No, you won’t need a background check as a parent helper since you’ll never be left alone with any young people, including your own.
That said, we encourage parents to consider getting a DBS check and registering as Occasional Helpers. This gives us much more flexibility and greatly helps when we need extra support for activities or trips!
Do you have a hobby or job you can share
We’re always excited to welcome parents who want to share their skills or interests with our Cubs! Whether it’s your job, a hobby, or a special talent you think the Cubs would enjoy, we’d love to have you join us for a session.
In the past, Cubs have had a blast with a professional photography lesson, explored local archaeology, taken part in a fun chemistry demo, and even had a visit from a submarine captain!
So don’t be shy—add your name to the parent rota. We’d love to hear what you have to offer!
