Scouts generally move up to Explorers between the ages of 14 and 14½, though this can be flexible depending on their ability and attitude. They might transition a little earlier or later. Closer to the time one of the leaders (usual;y Nick) from Highgate and Hornsey will be in touch

I’m a Scout Moving Up to Explorers. What Will Happen?

Around the age of 14, we’ll start discussing with you when you might want to move up to Explorers. This could be shortly after the discussion, or you might prefer to wait until some of your friends are ready to move up. You may also want to try a taster session or two with the Explorers.

Once we’ve made a plan, we’ll update your parent or guardian to keep them informed and to give them a chance to ask any questions..

What Should I Expect or What Is Different About Explorers?

Some things will remain the same when you move. Your uniform will change, but you’ll still earn badges and awards. You’ll still engage in fun activities and occasionally get your hands dirty.

The major change is the amount of freedom you’ll have. Between the ages of 14 and 18, you’re nearing adulthood and will be treated accordingly. You’ll make more decisions, plan your own activities, travel, and tackle challenging expeditions. You’ll also focus on valuable, transferrable life skills. The activities you participate in will offer many opportunities to seize life and explore where it can take you.

I’m a Parent of a Scout with Additional Needs. I’m Not Sure If They’re Ready for Explorers Yet. Is There Flexibility Around the Age They Move Up?

Yes, there is flexibility. At Scouts, everyone should face a similar level of challenge, and individual needs are always considered. More information on flexibility and reasonable adjustments can be found at scouts.org.uk/diversity. Generally, leaders stick to the suggested age ranges unless there are additional needs or exceptional circumstances requiring extra time.

When the time comes to make the move, our visual resources are perfect for those needing additional support. These resources are especially helpful for young people with additional needs or those on the autism spectrum who may face increased anxiety around change.
