Volunteering with Scouts – Make a Difference, Have a Laugh, Learn Something New
Scouts isn’t just for young people – it’s for anyone who wants to make a real difference in their community while having fun along the way. At 224 North London Scout Group, we’re always looking for friendly, enthusiastic adults to join our team – whether it’s every week or just now and then.
Why Volunteer with Scouts?
People join us for lots of reasons. According to a national survey, the top three are:
- “I wanted to improve things and help people”
- “It would give me a chance to use my existing skills.”
- “Someone asked me to help”
We’re asking you now. 😉
You don’t need any previous experience. We’ll provide the training, support, and (when appropriate) a cup of tea. Whether you’re great with kids, organised behind the scenes, handy with a hammer, or just happy to give something a go, there’s a place for you.
The Impact of Volunteering
Helping out with Scouts can be genuinely life-changing for both you and the young people you work with.
- 70% of volunteers say they feel happier and more satisfied with life
- 66% feel more confident
- 42% say it’s helped them feel less lonely
- 33% say it’s reduced stress
And yes, some of us have learned how to put up a tent in the dark or light a campfire with just one match (eventually).

What Kind of Roles Are There?
You don’t have to be a leader in uniform (though you can be if you want). You could:
- Help run sessions or games
- Join the parent rota for Beavers, Cubs or Scouts
- Organise fundraising or manage the admin
- Sort kit, drive the minibus, paint the hut, or handle the website
- Come along on camps and trips to lend a hand
Even just one evening a term can make a real difference.
Who Can Volunteer?
Absolutely anyone. Scouts are proudly inclusive – welcoming adults of all genders, backgrounds, faiths (and none). Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, student, or just someone who loves supporting young people, we’d love to hear from you.
You’ll be joining a UK-wide community of over 141,000 adult volunteers – and an international movement of over 57 million Scouts.
Help Us Help More Young People
There are currently over 100,000 young people on waiting lists across the UK because there aren’t enough adult volunteers.
Every extra adult means more young people can experience adventure, build confidence, and develop essential life skills.
Ready to Get Involved?
Please email us at volunteer@224northlondonscouts.org.uk or speak with one of the leaders at your child’s section. We’d love to chat, answer any questions, and help you find the proper role.
Join the adventure – it might just be the best thing you’ve ever done.
