Starting something new is exciting, but it’s completely normal for both children and parents to have a few butterflies before the first meeting.
Will they make friends?
Will they enjoy it?
What do they need to bring?
Will they be okay without me?
The good news is that almost every family feels exactly the same, and our volunteer team is here to help make your child’s first visit enjoyable, relaxed and memorable.
Whether your child is full of confidence or a little shy, we’ll do everything we can to help them feel welcome from the moment they arrive.
Before You Arrive
There’s no need to buy a uniform before your child’s first meeting.
For a taster session, we simply recommend bringing:
- Comfortable clothes suitable for games and crafts.
- Trainers or sensible footwear.
- A named water bottle.
- A smile and a sense of adventure.
Some activities take place outdoors, so we’ll let you know in advance if your child needs a waterproof coat or sun hat.
Arriving at the Scout Hut
When you arrive at 224 North London Air Scouts, one of our volunteer leaders will greet you and introduce themselves.
We’ll show you where to sign in, answer any questions and help your child settle into the meeting.
If they’re feeling a little nervous, that’s perfectly normal. Many children take a few minutes to look around before joining in, while others are off playing within seconds.
Every child settles at their own pace.
Meeting New Friends
One of the best things about Squirrel Scouts is the friendships children make.
Our meetings include plenty of games and activities that encourage everyone to work together, chat and have fun.
Before long, you’ll often find children who arrived not knowing anyone happily playing alongside their new friends.
What Will They Do?
Every meeting is different, but a typical session might include:
- A fun welcome game.
- Creative crafts.
- An outdoor adventure or active game.
- A simple challenge to complete together.
- A story or reflection.
- Celebrating what everyone has achieved.
There is no pressure to be the best or get everything right. We simply encourage every child to have a go and enjoy themselves.
Our Volunteer Leaders
Our Squirrel Scout meetings are led by friendly volunteers who are passionate about helping young people develop confidence and enjoy new experiences.
Safety and wellbeing are always our priority, and all adult volunteers follow Scouts’ safeguarding procedures and complete the appropriate checks and training for their roles.
We also value the support of parents who volunteer their time to help make activities possible.
Do Parents Stay?
Every child is different.
Some are happy to join in straight away, while others may need a little reassurance during their first visit.
Our leaders will talk with you before the meeting and help you decide on the best approach to help your child feel comfortable.
The aim is always to help children become confident and independent while knowing their parents are close by if needed.
We also encourage a parent rota across all sections
What Happens at the End?
At the end of the meeting, your child will leave with plenty to tell you about.
You might hear about a game they loved, a new friend they made or a craft they’re proud to bring home.
Our leaders will also have a quick chat with you to answer any questions and see how your child enjoyed their first experience.
